Presence & the Art of Abstract Thinking

Abstract thinking separates us from other forms of life, and it’s a handy skill to possess. Abstract thinking is at the heart of technology, art, and much of the observable achievements of mankind. But the concept of abstraction is to throw away what is real and observable, and replace it with a conceptual representation. Unfortunately, abstract thinking has caused us to create and live in a virtual reality world, far removed from “this” (present moment reality). Awareness is the only tool you have to see through these abstractions for what they are: manufactured mental constructs that can keep you from being present.

  1. Thinking about what you’ve said, especially about the presence part: I’ll have to read more about the brain and emotions, but is it possible that the more abstract we can think, the more emotional we are as a human being, and the further we depart from being an animal (which live on instinct) – fearing & loving lead us to think about the possibilities (creativity), negative & positive, which also perhaps determine the level of abilities to plan/see ahead, taking us further away from the now?

  2. You’ve no idea how much this helped me. Thank you so much. I feel like I’ve been unfettered and swept away from a deep rumination. (A deep ‘hybernation’ may be better said.)

  3. Well done.
Thank you for this information. You have given a gift to me of a knowledge I will refer to often. You have helped my in my quest… my journey to become the best that I can be.
I’m almost 50 and have been married to my wonderful wife for 28 years. Together as we grow we become closer from self discovery and from good people like you who care enough to share their knowledge. Thanks for making the world a better place.
    All my best,
    Tony

  4. I think some of the more intelligent and social animals- apes, elephants, dophins, are also capable of abstract thinking. They seem to be very aware of themselves and understanding of others and things outside of themselves. Koko the gorilla (the one they tought sign language) could make speculations about the future and reflections about the past in a very surpising way. Your right though that no other animal abstracts quite like we do.
